ECU Recovery: Intake Checklist For Faster Turnaround
When an ECU won’t start after a flash or the vehicle behaves unpredictably, the fastest way to help is receiving
the right information up front. This checklist is designed to reduce back-and-forth and improve safety.
Required (high priority)
- Vehicle year/model and transmission type (MT / SST)
- VIN (or at least the last 8 if you prefer partial)
- What happened immediately before the issue (flash attempt, battery drop, cable disconnect, etc.)
- Current symptoms (no crank, crank/no start, starts then stalls, limp behavior, etc.)
- File(s): last known-good ROM + current ROM (if available)
Helpful additions
- Tool used for flashing + software version
- Battery charger used (yes/no) and approximate voltage during flashing
- Any relevant logs or error messages
- Mods list (especially those affecting airflow, fueling, ignition)
Common causes worth checking first
- Low battery voltage or unstable power during write
- Connection interruptions (USB/OBD cable issues)
- Wrong file for ECU/ROM ID
- Unverified changes applied across multiple systems at once
Safety note
If you’re unsure, pause and verify basics: stable battery/charger, correct cable/tooling, and a confirmed ROM ID.
Avoid repeated flash attempts without understanding why the previous one failed.
